Who We Are
Roxana Community Unit School District is uniquely situated between the cities of Wood River and Granite City, just east of St. Louis, Missouri, along the Illinois side of the Mississippi River. This location places Roxana in the heart of the Metro East region, an area shaped by generations of industry, river commerce, and strong community ties that take great pride in their schools.
Founded in the early twentieth century during a time of rapid industrial growth fueled by nearby oil refineries and manufacturing, Roxana Schools have long served as a cornerstone of the community. Families came to the area in search of opportunity and built a district that reflected their values. Hard work, resilience, and a deep commitment to supporting one another became the foundation of Roxana. Over time, the district has grown into a K through 12 community unit system that continues to honor those roots while preparing students for the future.
Our schools are more than buildings. They are gathering places where traditions are carried forward, relationships are built, and community pride is on full display. Generations of Roxana families have walked the same hallways, cheered from the same stands, and worn the same colors. That shared experience has created a lasting sense of belonging and legacy.
Athletics have always played a central role in that identity. Friday night football, packed basketball gyms, and year round participation have helped unite the community. Roxana has built a reputation for competitiveness, sportsmanship, and pride. Alumni, families, and local businesses continue to support Shells athletics with passion and loyalty.
Today, Roxana continues to blend its rich history with forward thinking opportunities in academics, activities, and athletics. While the world continues to evolve, the core of who we are remains unchanged. Roxana is a proud and hardworking community dedicated to developing students, supporting one another, and carrying on a tradition that has stood strong for generations.
